Citizens Who Care

Citizens Who Care is the longest running “home grown” project of the Rotary Club of Andover. Mark Spencer created the program in 1996 to honor the unheralded work of the many volunteers in the Andover Community. The program consists of a traveling exhibit that includes portraits of nine volunteers accompanied by biographies. The exhibit spends one month in venues visited by the public, including Town Offices, Memorial Hall Library, Brickstone Square and several banks. Each year the Rotary Club seeks out nominations of outstanding community volunteers and selects from the many submissions. A committee chooses the nine finalists. Joan Johnson conducts the interviews and Mark Spencer photographs the subjects—each in an environment indicative of his or her accomplishments. The success of Citizens Who Care depends entirely on the submission of nominations from the Andover community at large. The criteria for being eligible are simple:

The person must have an Andover connection. Either the prospect must live in Andover or carry out the bulk of his or her work in the town. Either the community service is separate from the prospect’s job or is part of the job but is done significantly above the normal duties of employment.
Members of the Rotary Club of Andover are not eligible.
Those who have been honored in the past are no longer eligible.
