Call to Order - Rotary Reflection

After the Pledge of Allegiance led by President Bill Buck, Past President Ray Cannon offered an invocation that gave thanks for the season and the end of the rainy weather, welcoming Spring and sunshine.

Guests

Our guests today included Assistant District Governor Terri Kidder, Caroline Buck and Perrin Troiano.

District Assembly Overview

President-Elect Howard Perkins presented an overview of the upcoming 2010 District Assembly, in which attending Andover Rotarians will get to fellowship with Rotarians from around the District, and attend plenary sessions regarding fundraising, public relations and public image enhancement. The District Assembly for our District # 7930 will be held on Wednesday, April 14th, at 3:15pm at the Crowne Plaza – Ferncroft in Danvers. The cost per Rotarian is $60, and President Bill announced that the Club will match any registering Rotarian, thus lowering the cost to $30.

Announcements & Upcoming Events

President Bill announced that the Lawrence Rotary Club’s 90th Anniversary celebration was a great event.

Event Co-Chair Rich Brenner gave a report on the upcoming “Merrimack Valley Has Talent” fundraiser, which is being offered jointly with our North Andover Rotary colleagues. He told us that the March 28th audition had 31 competitors, as compared to the first audition, which had 4, and that they closed the mall. The finals will be held on Sunday, April 25th at 1:00 pm at the Claddagh Pub & Restaurant in Lawrence; tickets are $15 per person, and Rich anticipates that each finalist (there are 20) may draw up to 10 friends, family members and fans – he also encouraged Rotarians to support the event by buying a ticket and attending the event, which promises to be entertaining.

Team Captain Jim Greeley reminded the Club that the annual Spelling Bee will be held on Friday, April 9th at 7:00 pm at the West Middle School. The Rotary Club of Andover has two teams, and inquiring minds are still trying to figure out whether having Mark Spencer on your team is a positive or a negative – never to be outdone by the hecklers in the crowd, Mark announced that he didn’t know which team he is representing, because his “agent is handling all the details”!

Jim Greeley also made an announcement about the Lazarus House’s fundraiser, which is a Red Sox raffle: on Sunday, August 1st, the lucky winner will be transported in style to Fenway Park in a limousine, along with 17 of his (or her) friends, and then enjoy watching the Red Sox – Tigers game from a private luxury suite (first base side), which comes with a food & beverage allowance. Only 750 tickets will be sold, at $100 per ticket. The drawing will be held on June 24th. Jim encouraged Club members to consider going in with several friends and co-workers, thereby making the $100 ticket cost more manageable on an individual basis.

Jim Sutton reviewed the Attendance Policy letter that had been distributed at last week’s meeting. The writer and others were later fined for taking a copy of the letter they would have received last week, had they been in attendance. For a copy of the letter, or for questions, members can contact either Dave Sollars or Ray Cannon, Co-Chairs, Club Administration.

Event Chair Ray Cannon then presented an update of the Citizens Who Care / Educator of the Year Fundraiser. Ray announced that the CWC Selection Committee had met last week, and selected 11 deserving award winners. He reported that EOY nominations, the deadline for which is April 15th, are “trickling in”. Rotarians are eligible to nominate worthy candidates from the Andover Public Schools, including administrators (but not including volunteers – who would, however, be eligible for a CWC award). Ray plugged the Silent Auction and Ad Book efforts that are underway, led respectively by Jimmy Snyder and Al Getler. Finally, Ray announced that his committee would be meeting immediately following the breakfast meeting.

Raffle Drawing

Joan Johnson oversaw the drawing of two raffle tickets, the winners being Jack Colbert and Rich Brenner. Although he didn’t win the pot of approximately $180, Jack did draw the high card, a King, to Rich’s Nine, and thereby claimed the $10 prize.

Sergeant at Arms

Fines were collected by Howard Perkins for those members who had taken a copy of the attendance policy letter, and Howard levied a fine for those members who were not participating in an Easter Egg Hunt with their children or grandchildren.

Joan Johnson contributed to the feed bag because she was going to be away for the next two meetings visiting family – I believe this was a Happy (to be visiting her grandchildren) / Sad (to be away from our smiling faces and matchless humor and wit) Dollar.

Al Getler offered up a few bucks in honor of the nascent sunshine, and lamented the fact that he will be slaving away from morning ‘til night at home in anticipation of house guests this Sunday.

Katharine Barr was happy that her 25-year old sump pump is still working.

Jack McSweeney was thrilled that Duke and Boston College are in the Final Four, and that his son will be attending the game in Indianapolis.

Perrin Troiano contributed to the cause, in celebration of his grandfather’s 70th birthday. His father, Bob Troiano, was happy that we had had an opportunity to join with the Kiwanis Club for the St. Patrick’s Day luncheon.

Caroline Buck paid a dollar to celebrate the addition to the Buck family of a new puppy, and her dad also paid in to the fund, with the announcement that their new dog is from a distinguished pedigree, going back 5 generations in Buck-dom.

Alan Michel gave a dollar in honor of Helene’s recent award as an outstanding audio-visual woman, as presented to her by Infocom.

Jim Greeley paid in to the fund and expressed thankfulness to all Andover Rotarians who had participated in Ironstone Farm’s recent fundraiser, making it a very successful – and fun – event. Jim mentioned that the sight of Matt Gold dancing was worth the price of admission alone.

Jim Sutton spoke for almost all of us when he shared his gratefulness for Spring, family, and Easter. There was a comment from the crowd directed at Mr. Spencer – something about an “Overpass”.

Peter Cotch, with his usual flair, announced that the Julian and Gregorian calendars are united this year, making Western and Eastern celebrations of the Easter holiday simultaneous.

Peter Caruso was just happy that it’s Easter and Passover.
