March 26, 2010 Meeting

The Four Way Test
(of the things we think, say or do):

Is it the Truth?

• Is it Fair to all
   Concerned?

• Will it Build
   Goodwill and
   Better
   Friendships?

• Will it be
   Beneficial to all
   Concerned

Opening Song

For a change today, we began with Marie Stultz leading us in a rousing "God Bless America," an energetic way to begin the proceedings.

Rotary Reflection

Jamie Lyman filled us in on the activities of the newly-re-formed Interact Club at Andover High School being sponsored by our club. It is a self-governing club for teens ages 14-18, with support from some of our members.

The group has chosen to undertake two charities per year, one local and one international. They are joining with 250,000 interact clubs in 120 countries. Their first international project is to raise funds to purchase shelter boxes for Haiti. Anyone interested in learning more about the group, or lending a hand, is welcome to join them at 2:15 on Monday afternoons in the AHS cafeteria.

Sad News

President Bill Buck was sorry to have to inform us that our dedicated cook at the Lanam Club, Bill Dube, passed away last weekend at age 57. Bill D took great pleasure just last meeting in preparing our delicious corned beef and cabbage luncheon with the Kiwanis club and was looking forward to doing it again next year. Our sympathy goes out to the Lanam staff and his family.

Ambassadorial Scholar

Jim Sutton proudly presented our recently returned Ambassadorial Scholar, Christine Cloonan, who enjoyed a year in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Prior to her trip, Christine was employed in the Spanish Department at Phillips Andover Academy.

Christine attended university in Buenos Aires and told us that it was a most amazing experience. She was supported by the Club de Nueva Pompeya, the only club that has its own house. Get this -- their meetings begin with dinner at 9 p.m.! Isn't that when most of us are getting ready for bed?

Christine related some of the activities she enjoyed including traveling to the tip of South America and having dinner with the family of the local president of the club in the area. Other experiences included a beach trip with her club's outgoing scholar; a trip to Cordoba during election time, where all residents are required by law to vote and must have a card stamped as proof. During July there was a big swine flu hysteria which resulted in cancellation of flights in and out, and schools, museums, theaters and malls closed. She remarked about the rapid increase in the prices of masks and hand sanitizers.

In August she accompanied her host parents to a gaucho ranch. She mentioned the importance of the meat-producing areas to the culture. A favorite trip was to the Mendosa area wineries. In October she travelled with other Rotary scholars to Machu Picchu for four days and enjoyed some karaoke sessions with the group.

In November, her visit to a local Rotary club resulted in an offer from one of its woman members, who would be going to Boston, to meet Christine's family and bring back anything she needed from home. On Thanksgiving she visited an American club and enjoyed dinner and coffee with them. To round out the year, in December everyone in the club visited a Greek community club, followed by a girls' weekend at the beach.

Christine closed by relating about how much she learned about another culture and how she appreciated being able to utilize her Spanish on a daily basis.

Guest Speaker

Today we were introduced to Joanne Bissetta, the Green Communities Coordinator for the Department of Energy Resources. Joanne's job is to work with energy related issues such as projects and money saving tips.

Her department was established by the Green Communities Act of 2008. Their services include energy audits for municipal buildings, contracting, web-based software, training, incentives and grant programs, all designed to promote energy efficiency. They also have available consulting expertise for solar panels, HVAC systems, solar farms on capped landfills, high performance and passive heating and cooling.

The Green Commnities Grant Program provides $10M annually to towns designated as green communities for projects designed to reduce usage by 20% in five years. Joanne mentioned that the "Stretch Code," which affects renovation of existing homes and new construction for energy efficiency, will be on the Town Meeting Warrant for Andover's upcoming Town Meeting.

For further information on the wide range of services, go to www.MASSSAVE.org.

Club Business

Al Getler has provided order forms and size specifications for the advertising book for Citizens Who Care/Educator of the Year. He encouraged everyone to work on getting advertisers and emphasized the need for major sponsor suggestions.

Jimmy Snyder has provided auction donation forms to be used in conjunction with the event. Suggested items that are good sellers are travel and home items, health and wellness certificates, art and leisure, sporting goods and memorabilia, and auto-related items.

David Lindsay gave a Talent Show update, with the second tryouts taking place on Sunday March 28 at 1:00 p.m. He asked for volunteers for that day. Next week he will begin selling tickets for the event which is scheduled for the Claddagh on Sunday, April 25.

Reminders: Spelling Bee - April 9

Neighbors in Need Dinner - April 17

President Bill closed the meeting with thanks to our two speakers. Due to time constraints the raffle and Sergeant-at-Arms were put off until next week.
