February 5, 2010 Meeting

The Four Way Test
(of the things we think, say or do):

Is it the Truth?

• Is it Fair to all
   Concerned?

• Will it Build
   Goodwill and
   Better
   Friendships?

• Will it be
   Beneficial to all
   Concerned

Call to Order- Rotary Reflection

President Bill Buck began the meeting in his usual upbeat fashion. After reminding the members and guests where they were and the date, President Buck led the crowd through the Pledge of Allegiance and the Four Way Test.

Andrew Santos delivered the Rotary Reflection. He mentioned that the quote came from a movie about the 1980 US Hockey team. He also threw in that he had not been born yet (see happy dollars below).

US Hockey Coach Herb Brooks’ quote, “But on one weekend, as America and the world watched, a group of remarkable young men gave the nation what it needed most - a chance, for one night, not only to dream, but a chance, once again, to believe.”

Guests - New Member - 2010-2011 Officers

Guests and Visiting Rotarians: Dick Harrington, the new Andover Interact Club from Andover HS and Sonia LaRock, Branch Manager, Danversbank, a prospective new member.

A new member also joined the ranks of the club today. Edward DiStefano was welcomed to the club by President Buck as his sponsor Phil Mason was not present. Ed addressed the club by thanking Phil and telling the club how much he looks forward to making lifelong relationships.

The slate of officers that will be put in place for Andover Rotary’s 15th year was presented for vote by President Elect Howard Perkins. The vote was led by Jim Sutton, who declared that, “after a reasonable pause,” for objections the vote was official. Congratulations to the 2010-2010 officers.

In his address to the club, President Elect Howard pointed out the club’s energy, how the new members have jumped in and that he is anticipating a great year. He stressed the need to continue to build the club by inviting prospective new members.

Speaker - Art McDermott

Next Brian Mercer (aka Dave Sollars due to a name tag switch) introduced speaker Art McDermott. Art is not a new comer when it comes to speaking to the club. He previously spoke to the club about fitness when he operated 180 Sports Club. The club is now closed and Art need to do some reinvention.

In addition to his activity as an author, adjunct instructor at UMass Lowell and the assistant track coach at Andover High School, Art went back to school to be certified as a Nutritionist.

Art now concentrates on helping people meet their fitness goals through exercise and nutrition. He said that 20% of fitness is reached through exercise and the rest comes through the choice you make in what you put in your body. You are indeed what you eat.

If it flies, runs, grows in the ground and is green then Art suggests that is what the human body is designed to consume. He pointed out that grocery stores are not designed to keep us healthy, but one trick is to only shop the outside aisle for meat, dairy, vegetables and fruit.

A few other pointers: Eat for your health, not for entertainment. Consume fish oil (but be sure it is mercury free). And, instead of joining a health club for a monthly debt, join Art’s Boot Camp for monthly progress.

Announcements

- So far the district has raised enough money for 80 Shelterboxes. There is more activity planned including a weekend display at the Rockingham Mall.

- Interact is up and running at the high school. The club meets on Mondays at 2:15 p.m. in the cafeteria. They are planning a bake sale to raise money for Shelterboxes. Present today were four young ladies. They invite new members to join from the high school and would not mind seeing a few young men step up.

- The World Peace Dinner was held on Tuesday night at the Danversport Yacht Club.

- On March 6 there will be a CPR class taught by the real Brian Mercer. It begins at 8:30 at the Eagle-Tribune.

- On March 18 there will be a joint service club meeting with Kiwanis. The theme is St. Patrick Day and President Bill would like to find an Irish comedian.

Drawing

Matt Gold had to draw a card form a full deck. He said it was been a while since he was around a full deck. He drew an 8 of our hearts. Mark Spencer, after knocking over the cards in front of his daughter, drew a five. $10 for Matt.

Happy Dollars

- Many mentions of how great it is to see Alice Coogan back. She is indeed a brave and determined member and the club’s support and well wishes are with her.
