May 15, 2009 Meeting

The Four Way Test
(of the things we think, say or do):

Is it the Truth?

• Is it Fair to all
   Concerned?

• Will it Build
   Goodwill and
   Better
   Friendships?

• Will it be
   Beneficial to all
   Concerned

Pledge, Song and Invocation

Ask Joan. She took notes for the first few minutes and I was too busy trying to get seconds of the scrambled eggs. But I am fairly certain that Maestro Marie led us in another rendition of an old chestnut and Ray led us in a pithy invocation.

Announcements

If you missed last Saturday's strategic planning session Bill Buck brought you up to speed. Along with fellow organizer Ray Cannon, the two will take ideas generated from the meeting and summarize them for the Board.

President Dave initiated its newest member, Andrew Santos. Dave imparted information that all Rotarians should know, such as the first Rotary project being public restrooms in the Windy City, though there may have been more wind coming from the extended length initiation.

The twelfth annual Citizens Who Care reception will share the spotlight on June 10 with the first annual Educator of the Year. If you don't get your fill of hors d'oeuvres then come the next day to Temple Emanuel for the Andover Historical Society's annual Heritage Award. In lieu of a bonafide recipient the AHS chose this editor. You will then have one week to bulk up for the next big event - the Installation Banquest-cum-breakfast on 6/19.

Dave finished off the extended announcements reading an e-mail from Cal Mutti who recounted the good old days when he was the Vocational chair.

The Main Event - Who Does What

Everyone was a vocational speaker, even if for just one minute. Dave went where no Andover Rotary president went before and had each member stand and give a brief description of his vocation. So here's what we do:

Dave Lindsay - As a veterinary acupuncture, sticks needles in places I don't care to know. His other personality does web design and hosting and his third is North Andover's animal inspector

Rick Stern - Property management for the past 20 years (when not fishing in the Merrimack)

Dave Sollars - Fishing

Andrew Santos - He is a financial officer at Enterprise Bank. See him for a loan.

Jack McSweeney - He owns Andover Buys,a 4 person buyer's broker that operates nationwide and specializes in commercial property.

Jim Sutton - In case you've been in a coma he is has been a library director for 35 years--Andover's director for almost 2 decades.

Steve Ventre - He is a commercial banker for Riverbank but more interesting in person.

James Lyman - He owns a self storage facility in Cambridge. The boats you see on his front lawn are for sale as part of his side venture of selling water ski boats.(Sure.)

Steve Druth - Husband and commercial real estate broker for the past 20 years. His real estate signs are everywhere and he drives a Maserati so he must be good.

Peter Caruso - Attorney specializing in real estate, probate, estates, newspapers and any good social cause needing pro bono advocacy. He drives a Porsche so he is good but not as good as Steve.

Richard Brenner - He has been a home builder since 1992 and now does mostly residential real estate. He also has incredibly talented kids.

Ray Cannon - Ray is an attorney specializing in asset protection planning and any good social cause needing pro bono advocacy.

John Colbert - A CPA with the 5th largest firm in the country this button down guy does audits and quality control. He shows as much excitement as a CPA ought to.

Alan Michel - Media literacy--which means helping kids in schools use audio-visual tools to get their messages out. He founded Home, Inc to run his non-profit group. He also does video production for people who actually pay and any good social cause needing pro bono filming. He skis in April.

Marie Stultz - She prides herself on being annoying but not even the annoyed can deny her the 35 years of teaching kids to sing, 3 published books and 30 compositions. Marie is president of the "Speak up wherever you are" club.

Mark Spencer - When he grows up he'll figure out what he wants to do. For now he is closing down Carriage House Portraits and working as the Director of Technology for a high-tech research company in Woburn, Agiltron.

Joan Johnson - Many decades of selling homes has given license for Joan to pursue community service and help any good social cause needing pro bono work including her grandchildren.

Matt Gold - He is a real doctor who prefers to sing and do community theatre. He is the president of the Massachusetts Neural Association and a charter member of the Columbo Disheveled Club.

Deedee O'Brien - Always on one time zone behind, Deedee is the founder and executive director of Ironstone Farm. Her real passion is for thoroughbred horses and Guinness.

Bill Buck - This realtor owns Stone Wall Realty and donates countless hours to help any good social cause needing pro bono work. His other occupation is his blonde wife and two blonde daughters.

Phil Mason - Phil put in 35 years in active duty and neglected to say that he rose to the rank of General. Another 13 lucky years in the defense industry and 13 years of retirement brings him to the present. He has 14 grandchildren - one too many.

Paul Mercandetti - He moonlights as a singer (thus, the hair). During the day he provide data security, designs websites and hosts them as well. On weekends he is on his boat (singing).

Helene Andersen Michel - She has been in the audio-visual field since videotape was invented and men were the only ones allowed. She is currently head honcho for Audio visual Innovations. She once videoed Mick Jagger and crashed his private hotel room.

Guests

One adult, Alice Coogan, joined two pint sized guests, the never-to-be-betrothed Cole Spencer and Kathleen Buck.

Fines & Happy Dollars

Deedee O'Brien arrived just in time to put in a buck as her excuse for taking one full hour to get to the meeting (that's dedication). General Phil is back and admitting to being this club's senior member at age 75, but by Mark's calculation, he's more like 95.

Dave Sollars looks pretty good for being a grandfather again, this time to Sofia. Matt Gold is sharing his golden voice this weekend with the Boston Youth Choir group; Steve Druth made the front page of the Townsman, and his daughter Alia made the front stage at Les Miz, playing the winsome Cosette. Andrew Santos was so happy to become a new member that he threw in the $10 he won in the raffle.

Proud papa David Lindsay is celebrating that his daughter Sarah has finished her second year of medical school, and he still has enough cash to welcome our newest member. Jim Sutton, another of our esteemed group, will be lauded by the MV Chamber of Commerce as a Distinguished Citizen at a breakfast at Indian Ridge Country Club on June 4. Still time to get your tickets.

The ever-resourceful Winchester club has offered to donate $75 to our club if any of our golfers will register for their golf tournament upcoming. Check their website for details.

No Meeting

Don't forget and show up at the Lanam Club on the 22nd, or you will go away hungry. Next meeting is May 29. See you then!
